Where is Yanbu

Yanbu lies on the Red Sea coast in the west of Saudi Arabia and belongs to the Medina region. Medina matters here only as a starting point for the road and bus journey. Three areas share the name, and it helps to keep them apart from the start. Yanbu al-Bahr is the historic coastal district in the north and home to the old quarter of al-Sur. Yanbu Industrial City lies south of it on the coast, with the waterfront, Al Nawras Island, Yanbu Lake Park and the Events Garden. Yanbu al-Nakhl lies in the east of the governorate and is linked to date palms and springs.

Anyone planning a trip to Yanbu in Saudi Arabia should think in districts, not in one centre. Ask for the district whenever you book, and do not assume that two places are within walking distance.

Things to do in Yanbu

The old town of Yanbu al-Bahr is the cultural highlight. Al-Sur has former merchant houses built of sea stone, with palm trunks in the roofs, wooden doors and mashrabiyya screens. Opening times and access to individual houses are worth asking about on the spot.

On the coast, the beaches and waterfront of Yanbu Industrial City are the place for a walk. Al Nawras Island is linked to the waterfront by a bridge of roughly 500 m, and Yanbu Lake Park is an artificial lake park. Each site has its own rules, so check them before you go.

Under water, the official destination page lists the Seven Sisters reef as a target (updated 19 August 2026). The diving page explains dive centre options and courses, and the snorkeling page covers trips for people without a certificate.

The Yanbu Flower Festival is held in the Events Garden of the Industrial City. Its dates change from year to year, which is why the weather and best time page treats it with care.

Travel advice in October 2026

Read the current advice before you book and again before you leave.

Germany's Federal Foreign Office warns against travel to Saudi Arabia. The warning has been valid since 29 October 2026 (status 31 October 2026) and describes attacks and considerable risks for air traffic. Since early September it has also mentioned the Medina province.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) names Yanbu in its notice of 27 October 2026, in connection with the raised threat to ports and energy infrastructure. It warns of further disruption and flight cancellations and advises against all but essential travel to the rest of the country.

Check the latest notices before booking and before departure, and read the cancellation terms of every flight, room and tour. Entry rules and the dress code are on the visa and rules page.

Getting to Yanbu

By air, by bus from Medina or by road from Jeddah.

Yanbu is served by the Prince Abdulmohsin bin Abdulaziz International Airport, which the airport operator lists among its international airports. From Medina the road is about 230 km and takes roughly 2.5 hours by car. Bus line NW22 also runs between Medina and Yanbu, and a timetable example from April 2026 is on the getting there page. From Jeddah, a guide from 2022 gives about 3.5 hours by road.

Most visitors find a car the practical choice, because the old town, the Industrial City, the coast and al-Nakhl are spread out. Flights can be cancelled or delayed at short notice at the moment, so keep your plans flexible.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official Yanbu website?

No. This site is an independent travel guide. It is not the official website of Visit Saudi, the Saudi Tourism Authority, RCJY (the royal body for Jubail and Yanbu) or Yanbu airport.

Is Yanbu the same as Yanbu Industrial City?

No. Yanbu al-Bahr is the historic coastal district in the north, Yanbu Industrial City lies south of it, and Yanbu al-Nakhl is in the east. The old town and the festival venue are in different districts.

Can I get a tourist visa for Yanbu?

The official eVisa portal lists Germany, Austria and Switzerland among eligible countries, but eligibility depends on your passport. The visa is valid for 1 year, with multiple entries and stays of up to 90 days.

What should I wear?

Wear modest, loose clothing that covers elbows and knees. For beaches and private facilities, ask about the rules of that specific place beforehand and dress conservatively if unsure.
